Service Overview
Sydney has more sloping blocks than flat ones. A well-built retaining wall does more than hold back the dirt. It creates usable terraces, manages drainage, supports the garden above and below, and shapes how the entire backyard works.
A retaining wall that fails is one of the most expensive landscaping mistakes you can make. Walls that lean, crack, or collapse usually go wrong because of poor drainage behind the wall, wrong material choice for the load, or a footing that does not match the soil. Doing it properly the first time costs less than rebuilding it in five years.
Nazscapes builds retaining walls across Sydney in sandstone, timber, concrete blocks, and natural stone. We focus on garden retaining walls up to standard residential heights, designed for the specific site loads, drainage requirements, and how the wall will integrate with the rest of the landscape.
Whether you need a single garden wall to define a terrace, a wall to handle a sloping section of the yard, or a series of retaining walls to turn an unusable backyard into something liveable, every project starts with a free site visit. We assess the slope, soil, and access, then provide a clear written quote covering materials, drainage, and construction.

What We Cover
Each project is tailored to the site and budget, but these are the core service elements Nazscapes most often delivers.
Natural Sydney sandstone walls in dressed block or random rubble for a heritage or established garden look. Long-lasting and visually distinctive.
Treated hardwood sleeper walls for cost-effective retaining on smaller garden walls and terraces. Suited to standard residential garden heights.
Besser block, link block, and rendered block walls for cleaner lines and longer-lasting structural retaining at standard garden wall heights.
Bushrock, drystone, and feature stone walls for visual character and integration with established landscapes.
Agricultural pipe, geofabric, gravel backfill, and weep holes installed behind every wall so water moves through rather than building up pressure.
Multi-level retained terraces that turn unusable steep slopes into a series of usable garden rooms, lawn areas, or entertaining zones.
Stairs, paths, and access connections built into the retaining design so movement between levels is safe and intentional.
Walls planned alongside paving, planting, turf, and garden edges so the finished result feels cohesive rather than bolted on.

What Clients Say
Recent feedback from Sydney homeowners who engaged Nazscapes for landscaping and outdoor construction work.
“The retaining walls and turf installation completely changed how usable our sloping block is. Communication was clear and the finished work feels built to last.”
Michael Rodriguez
Castle Hill, Hills District
“Our block had a steep drop at the back that was basically unusable. Nazscapes built a two-tier retaining wall system with proper drainage and then landscaped the new terraces with turf and planting. It genuinely doubled our usable garden space.”
David and Karen Whitfield
Kellyville, Hills District
“Nazscapes built a sandstone retaining wall along our driveway and connected it into the new front paving. The stone selection and finish quality are excellent. Two years on, it still looks exactly as it did on completion day.”
James and Melinda Bourke
Mosman, North Shore
Common Questions
The answers below cover the questions clients ask most often before they commit to design, construction, or staged upgrades.
Retaining wall costs depend on height, material, drainage requirements, and site access. Treated timber sleeper walls typically start from around $300 per linear metre. Concrete block walls usually run $500 to $900 per linear metre. Sandstone and natural stone walls range from $700 to $1,500+ per linear metre. We provide a detailed written quote after a free site visit.
In NSW, retaining walls under 600mm in height generally do not require council approval. Taller walls or walls in sensitive locations such as boundaries, drainage paths, or flood-prone areas may have additional requirements. We can advise on the approval picture during the site visit. Where a project requires certification beyond what we provide, we will let you know up front so you can plan accordingly.
It depends on the wall height, the load it needs to handle, the budget, and how the wall should look. Treated timber is the cheapest option and works well for garden walls under 1 metre. Concrete blocks are a strong, clean-lined option for higher residential garden walls. Sandstone and natural stone cost more but look distinctive and last decades. We recommend the right material for your specific site after the consultation.
A small garden wall up to 10 metres long usually takes three to five days. Larger walls or walls requiring excavation and drainage work can take two to four weeks. Multi-level terracing projects with multiple walls typically run four to six weeks depending on the scope, weather, and access.
Drainage is the single most important factor in a retaining wall lasting. Water building up behind a wall creates hydrostatic pressure that pushes the wall forward over time. Every wall we build includes proper drainage with agricultural pipe, gravel backfill, geofabric to prevent soil migration, and weep holes through the wall face. Skipping drainage to save money is the most common reason walls fail early.
Yes, but boundary walls have specific considerations. The wall location, drainage flow into neighbouring properties, and any potential impact on neighbouring structures all need to be considered. For walls on or near boundaries, we recommend talking to the neighbours before construction starts. We will flag any approval requirements during the site visit.
